Oak parquet – natural elegance that lasts for decades

The ideal base for building a deck is a concrete slab positioned 6–7 cm below the threshold of the exit point. However, the deck can also be installed on a gravel base, using standard concrete pavers to provide distance from moisture. This setup allows for ventilation beneath the deck—without it, moisture can cause the wood to warp, rot, and decay over time.

The deck should be built before installing parquet flooring in areas without external access, as the handling and cutting of materials can damage the already installed floors. This approach also helps prevent dust and dirt from spreading.

In already finished buildings, installing a deck on a balcony is more demanding, as it requires more time—resulting in higher costs.

It is recommended to lightly sand the deck at the beginning of spring using a machine that doesn’t damage or thin the wood, followed by oiling. This removes dirt and old oil. The deck can also be sanded manually with sandpaper, though this requires time and some skill.

Due to dust and other debris, the deck should also be maintained with suitable non-aggressive, eco-friendly cleaning agents. These are sprayed onto the swept surface, scrubbed with a stiff brush, and then rinsed with a pressure washer from a distance of 30–35 cm. Finally, the deck can be oiled again if desired.

This process helps keep the deck beautiful and durable for many years.

Bamboo is among the hardest and most dimensionally stable types of wood. It does not shrink, expand, twist, or swell like most other woods. Even at a board width of 140 mm, there is no visible deviation, which is why it is classified in the same category as genuine teak.

Its crushed fiber structure is compressed with resins under 2300 kg of pressure and then thermally treated at 200 °C. This process increases its durability and hardness by an additional 50%, eliminating sugars and hemicellulose that serve as food for fungi. As a result, the wood is protected from rotting and decay—something that unfortunately cannot be said for most other wood types.

Other woods contain natural resins that act as a binder, but during thermal treatment, these resins are lost, which compromises the wood’s structural integrity. Over time, such wood may rot from the inside, leading to visible issues like shrinking, expanding, and cracking.

The most suitable substructure is made from the same type of wood as the decking boards, as identical wood ages proportionally, preventing uneven aging that can destabilize the deck over time. At Kerowood, we offer a substructure made from identical bamboo, which is rare or even nonexistent with other types of wood. Of course, bamboo can also be mounted on an aluminum substructure.

Kerowood bamboo is the only outdoor decking material with European certificates for resistance and durability in contact with water and soil. It is suitable for open-air decks, poolside areas, façade cladding, and fences. It has been installed in more than 40 countries worldwide, in various climate conditions ranging from -40 °C to +45 °C.

Kerowood bamboo begins to develop a grey patina over time (approximately 6 months) if not oiled, similar to all other types of tropical wood. With regular maintenance, however, it retains its original color.
