COMPARISON
When choosing a new outdoor terraces, most homeowners wonder whether to go with modern bamboo or stick with traditional wood. The comparison below highlights key differences—from durability to maintenance costs—and helps you make the right decision.
KEROWOOD BAMBOO TERRACES
TRADITIONAL WOODEN TERRACES
To ensure a flawless and durable outdoor bamboo terraces, choosing the right materials is essential.
We offer a complete system—from premium outdoor cladding to reliable substructures and invisible fastening elements.
Everything is coordinated, tested, and prepared for long-lasting performance – without compromise.

Kerowood outdoor cladding is available in two colors and two finishes. Both smooth and grooved top surfaces are available.

Extremely durable and high-quality oiled bamboo substructure in dimensions 2500 × 40 × 40 mm. The recommended installation spacing is 460 mm.

For installation, we use clips and screws with anti-corrosion protection, enabling hidden fastening and a visually refined finish.
The uniqueness of KEROWOOD bamboo lies in the processing of its crushed fiber structure, which is compressed under 2600 kg of pressure to create the hardest wood type on the Brinell scale (9.5 kg/mm²).
It is then thermally treated at 200°C – 220°C, which increases its hardness and stability by 50% and eliminates hemicellulose sugars—food for fungi that decompose wood—thus extending its durability.
Its lifespan without additional chemical protection is up to 30 years.
BRINELL HARDNESS SCALE
DURABILITY CLASS
Kerowood bamboo decks are very easy to install, as the top side of the boards features a tongue-and-groove system that allows for quick installation and connection without cutting or visible gaps between the boards—making it much more economical and visually refined.
The special symmetrical shape offers the option to choose either a grooved or smooth walking surface and allows for fast installation with Kerowood hidden clips. The installation is done without visible screwing, which prevents the wood from warping or cracking and preserves its original form.
Wood naturally shrinks, expands, warps, and bends due to its internal structure. If we break it down or press it out of its natural structure and then bond it again, we prevent this movement and create a fully stabilized form.
Due to its crushed structure and dimensional stability, Kerowood bamboo decking does not crack, expand, warp, or split like other wood types with a natural wood grain. It is one of the most stable types of wood and, thanks to all its advantages, ranks in the same class as genuine teak. It offers a beautiful, warm appearance and the natural feel of wood.
PROCESSING PROCESS
How a fast-growing bamboo plant becomes a durable material for outdoor surfaces.
We use Phyllostachys edulis (Moso) bamboo, which is 5 to 6 years old, as that is when it reaches optimal hardness and structure. During harvesting, the stalks are first cleaned, peeled, and cut into long strips or fibers.
In the heat treatment phase – carbonization – bamboo strips are heated to 200–220°C, removing sugar and moisture. This makes the material more resistant to humidity, mold, and insects. Different levels of carbonization affect the color and density of the boards.
After heat treatment, the fibers are compressed under high pressure (more than 2500 kg/m²) into a dense, extremely strong structure. They use environmentally friendly adhesives free of formaldehyde, giving the bamboo the properties of the hardest types of wood.
Finally, the panels are cut, profiled, and protected. Decking boards have an anti-slip surface and additional protection against water, soil, UV rays, and chlorine – making them ideal for poolside areas.
Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant in the world and also a very rapidly renewable natural resource. In contrast to trees, which regenerate in 40 to 60 years, bamboo can be harvested every 4 to 5 years.
The production of Kerowood bamboo reduces CO₂ footprint and does not increase greenhouse gas emissions, making the KERO product CO₂ neutral.
FSC is an international non-profit organization that promotes sustainable forest management. The production of Kerowood wood is environmentally friendly and socially responsible.
Thanks to a special thermal treatment, Kerowood bamboo achieves high resistance to moisture, mold, and fungi, making it an ideal choice for outdoor surfaces—even in demanding weather conditions.
MISTAKES IN WOODEN TERRACE INSTALLATION
Low-quality material and unprofessional installation and maintenance can shorten the lifespan of a wooden deck and lead to higher financial costs.
Proper planning and choosing the right type of wood is one of the most important aspects of building a wooden deck.
The lifespan of your deck will mainly depend on the selection of quality wood, which—when properly maintained—will last much longer.
Below, you can see the consequences of poor wood choice and unprofessional deck installation.

Incorrect choice and dimensions of tropical wood. Over time, expansion, shrinkage, and cracking of the wood occur.

The selected type of wood is not suitable for exposed decks, especially in overly wide dimensions, as it begins to expand and splinter.

Due to improper drying, the wooden cladding began to crack and deteriorate after a year and a half.
